Imágenes estadísticas en la cultura visual de la Argentina moderna
Desde las últimas décadas del siglo XIX, en Argentina, estadísticos con diversa formación y grado de cercanía a los círculos políticos e intelectuales de la época se abocaron a generar un cúmulo creciente de cifras desde reparticiones estatales creadas a esos fines. La elaboración de gráficos estadísticos fue una de las estrategias elegidas por ellos para transmitir el conocimiento social producido desde el Estado y divulgar esas representaciones numéricas tanto dentro como fuera del país.
Explorar la propuesta gráfica de la estadística pública argentina entre las décadas de 1890 y 1930 nos permite conocer el modo específico en que un actividad especializada contribuyó a la formación de una cultura visual vinculada a la práctica científica en un contexto histórico particular como el del cambio de siglo.
Este artículo presenta un panorama de los modelos de representación gráfica que circularon en la última parte del siglo XIX y las primeras décadas del XX. Su objetivo es describir algunas de las convenciones de representación visual allí presentes, inscribirlas en el “internacionalismo estadístico” de fines de siglo XIX, así como reflexionar sobre el proceso de construcción social de la significación a través de imágenes estadísticas.

In Argentina, since the last decades of the nineteenth century, statisticians with diverse backgrounds and varying proximity to the political and intellectual circles of the time generated a growing body of statistical figures from state agencies that were created for this purpose. The production of statistical graphics was one of the strategies chosen by them to transmit social knowledge produced by the state and disclose these numerical representations inside and outside the country.
Through the exploration of statistical graphs we aim to meet the specific way in which a specialized practice contributed to the formation of a visual culture linked to scientific activity in a particular historical context such as the turn of the century.
This paper presents an overview of graph models that circulated in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth. Its objective is to describe some of the conventions of visual representation, its relationship to the "statistical internationalism" of the late nineteenth century and analyze the process of social construction of meaning through statistical images.
